Hit American sitcom Cheers is set to be given an Irish makeover 20 years after it went off-air.

Cheers returning to TV in Ireland

The popular TV comedy, starring Ted Danson, Kirstie Alley and Kelsey Grammer, is to be remade with an Irish cast and renamed Teach Sean after Dublin-based company Sideline Productions purchased the rights to the NBC show.

The programme's famous bar will be located in Ireland instead of Boston, Massachusetts and the new Cheers will feature similar characters to the original, but with an Irish twist.

Danson's character Sam Malone, a recovering alcoholic who owns the bar, will be renamed Sean and instead of being an ex-baseball player, he will be a former star of Gaelic sport hurling, according to the New York Post.

The new show will air on TG4.
