Night after night he sleeps in my son Liam's room while Kate (the youngest) comes in with me. I don't think he envisioned at the age of 42 being squashed into the wall by a little person in a fairly narrow single bed with a mattress harder than he'd prefer and also the added bonus of having permanent dents on his calves, the exact point where my son's three quarter length bed cuts into his legs, but life can be unpredictable.
A bedtime routine was something I took for granted a few years back. Hubby and I mostly went to bed together, fell asleep and then woke up in the morning to the sound of birds, rain or even planes, all of which are beautiful sounds compared to screaming little grumpy folk. Ah life was simple back then, my bed was dry every morning, lying in wee was a thing of a long forgotten four year old's past. But hey I can take it, I can. What I can't take is the permanent sleep deprivation and zombie like state I find myself so often in. It doesn't make for a very patient mummy during the day but chocolate helps, it helps a great deal.
Not that long ago, I was forced to sleep in the middle of the bed with my two year old on one side and my four year old on the other. A toddler sandwich! Daddy lay across the bottom like the dog. This, needless to say, didn't last. The best way we've found to get a decent night's sleep is to take a bed each with one child in tow. People laugh when I tell them and the usual response is "sure they'll not want to share a bed with you when they're 15, just enjoy it!" What about when they're 14? Ah well, thank god for Netflix. It's got us through many a rough night.
How do those people that say they only need four hours a night do it? Mind you, they probably mean in a continuous stretch. That would help! We keep finding we're going to bed earlier and earlier to squeeze in a few more episodes of Modern Family, knowing that if we do want to get a few hours 9 o'clock is the cut off. At least it's 2014, a World Cup year no less. I don't watch football in general but I always watch the World Cup and often over the years have looked at my life in relation to where I was at the last World Cup and where I'll be by the next one.
So here's hoping by the time 2018 comes around I'll have had a few more good night's sleep.
