Exclusive designer shows will be held across the city over the next week, with collections from everyone from red carpet favourite Zac Posen to celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe.
It's a glance ahead to the Autumn/Winter collections that will be in store later this year, but if you're still thinking about your summer wardrobe it can also provide some great inspiration.
NYFW is also a chance to shop savvy and pick key pieces for spring that will last into winter. That means the blouse you pick in the shops now could still give that nod to fashion in December without looking outdated.
Rebecca McKinney, personal stylist at Victoria Square, is keeping a keen eye on what's coming down the catwalks and she says many of the key trends from Spring/Summer will still look great next season.
Last winter was dominated by dark hues mixed with gold tones and rich brocades, but this winter is set to be a much more feminine look, with pastel shades and floaty silhouettes.
"I am hoping there's going to be a return of key classic looks," she said, "so anything that has a clean lines.
"Think Stella McCartney - a great jacket, a tailored trouser specifically. If you buy now a high waist wide leg trouser, you're going to be able to wear them right through into A/W."
Vibrant shades like cobalt blue and teal are expected to make a big impact on the catwalk and filter through to the high street for winter trends, but those pastels that look so appealing for the summer months are expected to reappear.
If you're looking for one piece this season that you can wear into A/W13, Rebecca is backing a statement jacket, like this bouclé from Marks and Spencer.
Leather is a great choice, but she adds, "Don't go for black leather, maybe try nude or something softer.
"A really great tuxedo jacket or a Chanel style bouclé even if it's a pastel shade you can team it with black and wear that into next season, even though it'll look great for S/S," she said.
For those in their 20s or 30s statement trousers are going to be a key buy. Bright prints filled the Spring/Summer catwalk but if you opt for more neutral colours they will fit right into your winter wardrobe.
At House of Fraser, Pied a Terre clutches have dramatic bursts of colour, and accessories are an easy way of giving your wardrobe a bright injection.
And it's time to hunt out your polo necks, as Rebecca reckons they're making a comeback.
"If you can pull a pastel polo neck out of your wardrobe you can make it funky by teaming it with a printed trouser or really amazing jacket over the top," she explained.
If you're in the 40-50 age range tailoring is key and if you're not feeling brave enough for a bold trouser, check out a jacket.
Rebecca added: "Something with a bit of stud detail, maybe collarless, or a fitted tuxedo jacket will always look smart. You can buy these things now and they will be eternally stylish."
Monochrome are really making an impact on the high street, and this Warehouse shift uses stripes to update a classic shift shape.
For 60 plus, our stylist says it's time to embrace stripes, and says they're easier to wear than you'd think.
"There's a lot of monochrome happening at the minute, so anything that has a black and white stripe in it is going to be worthwhile keeping around."
