And so it begins... over the coming days, we'll be making a number of exciting announcements about UTV Ireland.

As I've said before, we have great ambition to make a real impact in the market and with the audience, when we launch on January 1st next year.

Today we announced that Alison Comyn will be joining the team as news presenter / anchor and journalist.

From Drogheda, Alison has had an impressive media career - working for newspapers, radio stations and numerous television channels. Her ability to relate to the audience and communicate is second to none. She's a darn good newsreader and never afraid to ask the tough questions in an interview. She's well briefed and knows her stuff.

When we were planning the station, Alison was always front of mind as the female newsreader (I worked with her at Sky News). From UTV Ireland's inception, we always wanted someone we could call UTV's - bringing a fresh look and feel to Ireland's newest television channel.

UTV Ireland and our news offering will be a real alternative, and we wanted an anchor that could deliver that and deliver authority, at the same time. Unless you have a long memory or read the Drogheda Independent, where until this week Alison was News Editor, you may not have heard the name before, but Alison will be a familiar face and a household name by this time next year.

The day we announced the launch of UTV Ireland back in November, Alison sent me a text expressing her interest in joining the new channel. Her message said: "It's the most exciting announcement in years for the media here" and "you can really shake up a tired market".

Our announcement made Alison eager to return to television. That made my job easy - and over a couple of meetings the deal was done. The challenge has been keeping it a secret for almost four months now (we're getting good at keeping secrets).

Well today, we publically welcome Alison to the UTV Ireland team and, in the days and weeks ahead, we think we'll begin to show how much we intend to bring to the market - making a real impact with the news and current affairs on our channel.

Welcome Alison, and good luck. And if you want to follow her on Twitter it's @alisoncomyn.

Michael Wilson is the Managing Director of UTV's Television Division.

Overseeing everything from the day to day running of UTV in Northern Ireland to the launch of UTV Ireland. His brief covers business development, online channels, regulatory affairs and the Contract and Licence commitments of the two channels.

Away from his job, he enjoys travel, current affairs, food - both eating out and cooking (he tells us he's pretty good in the kitchen) and his guilty pleasure is bad early Hollywood movies esp. horror and sci fi - think Bella Lugosi and Buster Crabbe!
