The Golden Ticket

So what did we learn from the first round of auditions on Britain's Got Talent? A 79-year-old gran is a better dancer than you will ever be.

Paddy and dancing partner Nico quite rightly left everyone stunned following their salsa routine during Saturday's show, which had more heart-stopping moments of Paddy being flung about the air than most of us could take.

We may all boo and hiss at Simon Cowell for immediately pressing his buzzer for the unlikely pair, but honestly, no-one was expecting what was to come next from the duo.

And as a result we saw the golden buzzer being used for the first time as Amanda Holden could not contain her excitement.

Paddy and Nico will now go through to the live semi-finals and the mind boggles at what viewers can expect from their next performance.

Considering the now high expectations, would firing Paddy out of a cannon and into the waiting arms of Simon be too much to hope for?

No matter what is in store, Paddy and Nico's performance will be one of the most anticipated and there is no doubt they are a great use of the golden buzzer.

With Simon, Alesha Dixon, David Walliams and Ant & Dec still to use the new feature, it has the potential to make this year's competition one of the toughest yet.

But superstar grannies aside, this week's opening round of BGT also brought an equal mix of potential stars (Lauren and Terrell, Collabro, Lucy Kay) and deluded hopefuls (Rocky the Owl, Mzz Kimberley, that guy who tried to eat the raw onion).

An exciting combination of talent and craziness was on offer in the first episode so hopes are high for the rest of the auditions.

And let's not forget Simon and co made a trip to Belfast earlier this year to source out the city's talent, so it is very probable there will be a local star for Northern Ireland to throw their support behind.

It's not going to be easy though - they will have a dancing gran to upstage.
