It happened at around 3.15pm on Saturday at Boots in the Upper Newtownards Road area.

No-one was hurt.

Police arrested a 32-year-old woman around 15 minutes after the attack took place.

She has been charged with robbery and several firearm offences.

Local MLA Robin Newton praised the "prompt" response of the PSNI.

"We are fortunate that young staff caught up in these incidents have not yet been physically harmed," said the DUP representative.

"The number of armed robberies taking place in the east of the city is very concerning.

"It is worrying that those who are prepared to carry out a robbery are all too ready to carry guns and knives.

"It seems that if these despicable incidents continue it is only a matter of time before someone is badly injured or worse. The public needs to support the PSNI as they do their duty in putting these criminals before the courts."

The woman will appear at Belfast Magistrates Court on Monday morning.

The charges are subject to review by the Public Prosecution Service.
