Despite the presence of a fully fit Cristiano Ronaldo, Germany hammered home four goals without answer - three of them courtesy of Thomas Muller.
Portugal were on the back foot even before Pepe's sending off for a light headbutt on Muller, with the score sitting at 2-0 at the time.
But after another two goals, there was no way back.
"I've been involved in the last three major tournaments, so I'm used to the pressure," Germany's goal-machine Muller said.
"But to score three goals in one game - that's pretty amazing, and the goals just got better and better.
"It's fantastic, but the merit also goes to the rest of the team."
