Sport Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has approved funding for the redevelopment of Windsor Park.

On Friday the minister announced that £31m would be going to the IFA to allow for the much-needed work to take place and increase the stadium's capacity.

The decision, will allow the IFA to appoint their main contractor for the redevelopment of Windsor Park, the home of the Northern Ireland international team and Linfield Football Club.

The minister said: "This signals a new chapter in the history of Windsor Park.

"Funding of £31m will allow the Irish Football Association to modernise Windsor and raise the capacity to 18,000.

"This is a tremendous boost for the local football family which will see two new stands and two refurbished stands."

The stadium plan was given planning permission earlier this year, however, problems over the IFA's governance held up the funding being released.

It is hoped the work will be completed by 2016.

The executive has pledged millions in funding to redevelop the three rugby, GAA and football sports grounds in Belfast.

Friday's announcement comes a day after planning permission was agreed for the redevelopment of Casement Park in west Belfast.

The Department of Culture Arts and Leisure is to provide £62m in funding for the major redevelopment plan which is expected to cost over £77m and boost the capacity of the ground to 38,000.

The GAA is to provide the remainder of the funding to complete the project.

Work is already well under way on Ravenhill after a £15m funding package was agreed at the start of the year.

Total waste of taxpayer's money as a new national stadium at the Maze would have been the better option by far. As usual everything must go to Belfast in case the locals might get lost having to travel such a long distance.

should be a new national stadium build so we could be proud of it and if linfield does get to any cup final then the game should not be played at Windsor pk

It is a disgrace that all the the stadia are being refurbished. The money should have all went to building a national sports stadium at the maze. This would have catered for all the sports. Why this never went ahead is beyond me. I suppose its all down to the fools we call politicans.
