The striker is due to play for Derby County in the Championship playoff final this weekend and felt that it wouldn't be in his or the international squad's interest for him to travel to South America.

Conor McLaughlin has been called up to replace Ward and will join up with the rest of the NI players after Fleetwood Town's League Two play-off Final on Monday.

A statement from the IFA said: "Ward, who is in Derby County's squad for this weekend's Championship play-off Final feels that it is not in his best interests or the interests of the international squad for him to travel to South America due to his extended club season.

"Fleetwood Town's Conor McLaughlin has been called up. McLaughlin's club is in the League Two play-off final on Monday, so he will join up with the international squad after the game."

Northern Ireland will play Uruguay on 30 May and Chile on 4 June.

Strange decision, full back for a forward, bring in the lad McClure from Burton Albion as well, let him know he 's wanted.

While Crusaders may be bossing the Danske Bank Premiership, it was their North Belfast rivals Cliftonville who made the headlines again this weekend.
