It was James Rodriguez who opened the scoring for the Colombians with just after an hour gone and there was a second goal to come from substitute Juan Quintero.
However, the Ivory Coast rallied and ex-Arsenal forward Gervinho kept them in the game.
While it was Los Cafeteros who triumphed, manager Jose Pekerman is not getting ahead of himself.
"It is, of course, a huge pleasure to see Colombia coming to this level - first of all at the World Cup after such a long period of time, and then having enjoyed two consecutive victories with players who are here for the first time," he said.
"However, we cannot start thinking ahead of time or what might be coming later on."
