With a number of top flight football managers feeling the pressure of late, Villas-Boas - who has been all too familiar with the downside of life in the big leagues - said Rodgers had earned his spot.

The pair met on a coaching course and were then reunited at Chelsea, under José Mourinho's reign.

"I did not know we would cross paths again, but we did in 2004 when he was at Chelsea as a youth team coach," AVB - who went on to later manage Chelsea, but was sacked after nine months - said.

"It has happened differently for both of us.

"But we have both been lucky that we have been able to work with a top manager, which has enabled us to strengthen our knowledge and use that experience."

He (Brendan Rodgers) is in a position where he deserves to be in with a bright future.

Rodgers has had a rough ride since being brought in to replace Liverpool legend 'King' Kenny Dalglish, struggling to lead his side to much needed league wins.

He's also had to deal with the fallout from disappointing summer transfer negotiations, which saw 11 of his players exit Anfield but no real fire power signed up.

On Wednesday though, Liverpool will travel to White Hart Lane to meet AVB's Spurs - having gone eight matches unbeaten in the league and with a chance to close the gap behind between the sides to just one point.

And Brendan Rodgers insists his team will continue to improve and to challenge their rivals.

"A lot of players want to be in the Champions League so, if they want to come here, that's an area we want to arrive in the coming years," Carnlough-born Rodgers said.

"We know we're not too far away - we're very close to arriving in that zone. You only need to look at some of the things that have gone against us this season, in terms of goals that were disallowed.

"If you take those points alone, that would have shot us right up there. But we're just going to take care of our own game and keep progressing. We know we have the qualities."

At Liverpool FC, you always want to be in for the top players and the top talents. This is a club that will bring those players here.

One man that Spurs will have a particular eye on is Luis Suarez, who has netted 13 goals in 19 appearances. Villas-Boas said he was well aware of the risk posed by the striker.

"He is an extremely good player. The amount of riot he creates up front on his own is absolutely incredible," AVB said.

"His range of movements is immense. He has a strong mentality and that's what makes him the great player he is."

The Spurs boss has also said that he thinks football fans are entitled to criticise their manager.

Both he and Rodgers have felt the wrath of some fans on occasion this season, while new Manchester City boss Rafael Benitez and Arsenal's Arsène Wenger were both booed at the weekend.

"The fans have the right to everything in my opinion," Villas-Boas said.

"They are the ones who breathe the biggest passion for the football club, they are the essence and they breathe the values of the football club.

"(As a manager) you have to take it. Sometimes we don't like what we hear, but that's life."
