Republic of Ireland international Robbie Keane is on his way to Aston Villa, ending his 13-year wait to join the club after a loan deal with LA Galaxy was completed.

The 31-year-old almost signed for Villa back in 1999 from Wolves, but ended up at Coventry instead over a late transfer fee hitch.

Keane is now set to stage a media conference at lunch-time on Thursday, after Villa received the green light from Galaxy in the early hours of the morning.

He'll make the move to Villa Park in time for a possible instant reunion with Galaxy teammate Landon Donovan in Saturday's home clash with Everton and stay until Major League Soccer restarts in March.

Villa boss Alex McLeish had hoped to sign Keane a year ago when he was in charge of Birmingham and the player was with Tottenham - but Keane went on loan to West Ham before leaving White Hart Lane for the US last summer.

He's now hopeful that Villa will benefit from Keane's experience.

"I believe we could be doing with that when you see one or two of our players getting injured over the last couple of weeks, it does leave us a little bit short," McLeish said.

"We've got young kids trying to prove themselves in the Barclays Premier League, but it's very scatter-gun the experience they are getting - with 10 minutes here, 15 minutes there.

"I really believe we could be doing with that wee bit of experience that someone like Robbie provides."

He's also confident Keane will be out to make a mark, ahead of the Euro 2012 finals with the Republic.

"I'm sure Robbie Keane will not want to let his standards drop at this stage of his career," McLeish added. "If anything, we should have a massively motivated boy on our hands."
