The province hit back after an early Castres penalty with a kick from Paddy Jackson after seven minutes to level the scores.

The home side took the lead minutes later with fullback Jared Payne producing a storming run before creating the space to send Andrew Trimble in a for a great converted score.

Jackson added a penalty and Ulster stretched their lead with a great individual try by Paul Marshall who chipped ahead before touching down.

Castres responded with a neat chip leaving the Ulster cover stranded as Marc Andreu raced in for a converted try.

Jackson then added a penalty as Ulster went into the break leading 23-10.

Marshall worked his magic again to dive over for his second try early in the second half.

The visitors closed the gap with good pressure leading to a try from winger Marcel Garvey after 50 minutes.

Ulster grabbed a dramatic bonus point try at the death with Luke Marshall breaking out of defence and Springbok star Ruan Pienarr racing in for a terrific score in injury time.

Ulster's next match is away to the Glasgow Warriors next Friday.
