A broadcast licence has been awarded by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa to UTV Media plc subsidiary UTV Media (GB) Ltd, along with its four joint venture partners.
The new radio station, talkSPORT 540AM, will broadcast to a potential audience of eight million people covering Gauteng province, taking in the commercial and administrative hubs of Johannesburg and Pretoria.
A consortium of five joint venture partners will each hold 20% equity in the new station.
It is hoped the in-depth local knowledge of the four South African partners will be complemented by talkSPORT's experience in driving audiences through delivery of attractive sports-led content.
I'm confident that our heritage and experience in sports broadcasting, together with the local knowledge and skills of our South African partners, will make talkSPORT 540AM a success.
John McCann, UTV
John McCann, UTV Media Group Chief Executive, said: "The talkSPORT brand has grown significantly over the past two years, since we became Global Audio Partner of the Premier League and began broadcasting live commentary to fans around the globe.
"We look forward to launching this new talkSPORT station with our partners in South Africa which is renowned for being passionate about sport."
talkSPORT International already broadcasts live Barclays Premier League commentary in eight languages to 24 countries around the world, with the new licence further strengthening its reach.
