The Oak Leafers were left with a difficult task after having a man sent off in the opening quarter of a feisty encounter.

Derry went into a three points lead after only 10 minutes as a brace of frees from Paddy Bradley were followed by a great score from play from the boot of Mark Lynch.

Tyrone replied with a point from Michael Murphy but Derry stretched their lead to five when Bradley finished off a nice move to net the opening goal of the game in the 16th minute.

But John Brennan's side were reduced to 14 men when James Conway was shown a straight red card for dissent.

Lynch added a point and, after Tyrone replied, Conleth Gilligan scored to make it 1-5 to 0-2.

The Red Hands were dealt a blow when Colm Cavanagh was stretchered off with damaged ribs.

But they scored the next two points through Peter Harte and Stephen O'Neill to cut the gap.

Owen Mulligan then scored a brilliant goal in time added on squeezing the ball under the Derry keeper Danny Devlin after a neat sidestep.

And when Cathal McCarron scored a point in the fourth minute of stoppage time the scores were level at 1-5 apiece.

Tyrone scored six of the first eight points after the restart to lead 1-11 to 1-7.

Joe McMahon then sent over a brilliant score from an acute angle as Tyrone stretched their lead with 15 minutes left.

McCarron then increased the margin to six points in the 62nd minute and there was no way back for the holders.

Cailean O'Boyle scored from the penalty spot for Derry in stoppage time but it was too late to affect the outcome.
