Mickey Harte's side tamed Donegal in Letterkenny, in spite of county captain Michael Murphy's goal helping his side to a three point half time lead.

Jim McGuinness' men managed to score just twice in the second half, as the Red Hands ran out winners by 0-13 to 1-7.

Elsewhere, in Section A Armagh were 1-16 to 0-15 winners over Queen's in a keenly fought contest at the Athletic Grounds.

In Section B, Fermanagh's clash with St Mary's fell foul of the weather, with the match referee declaring the Brewster Park pitch unplayable shortly before the game was due to start.

It was to have been former All-Ireland-winning Down boss Pete McGrath's first game in charge of the Erne county, after he replaced Peter Canavan last November.

No date for the rescheduled game has yet been confirmed.

The other game in the section did go ahead, as Derry beat Monaghan by 2-13 to 2-10 in a high-scoring encounter in Clones.

In Section C Liam Bradley's return as Antrim manager got off to a bad start as he saw his side fall to a nine-point defeat to Cavan at Creggan.

The Saffrons went down by 3-12 to 0-12, with Kevin Tierney netting twice for the Breffni men and David Givney also grabbing a three-pointer.

Meanwhile, Down easily overcame UUJ, with Mark Poland top-scoring with seven points for the Mournemen as they secured victory by 1-15 to 0-7.

The next round of matches is due to take place on Sunday 12 January.
