The team were beaten 3-1 in their Euro 2012 opener in Poznan on Sunday.

Sunderland star McClean was left on the bench in the second half as Trapattoni opted to replace left-winger Aiden McGeady with striker Simon Cox.

It has lead to questions over why the promising 23-year-old, formerly of Derry City, did not feature, after being called up on the strength of his Premier League performances.

Speaking to the press at the Republic's Gdynia training base, the Italian manager said: "I was waiting for this question".

He continued: "Remember when you asked me why five strikers? I said Cox is also a winger and he can also play in a three as an attacking striker. Remember when you said this?

"Cox is one of the strikers but also at his club, can play right or left. He is also a striker in fact and in the past, has scored goals.

"Our wingers yesterday were not too often in on goal. I ask you, how many goals has McGeady scored? How many goals has (Damien) Duff scored? They are our wingers.

"You don't remember? Also me. This is important because at that moment, we needed someone in that position who could also score. Remember also against Italy? Remember Cox scored from this position? He's a good player, Cox."

McClean made his senior debut as a substitute in February.

While Trapattoni was prepared to include the youngster in his final 23 for Poland and Ukraine, he appears to remain unconvinced about his level of experience.

The 73-year-old added: "You are friends with James, no?

"I have a duty. It would have been his first [competitive] game. When there are senior, experienced players in this situation, maybe there is tension. You can understand how much more tense a young player can be.

"It's important we give them a quiet opportunity, not when we need their performance under pressure. It's a heavy weight on his shoulders.

"McGeady is one of our best players, and Damien Duff the same.

"His time will come in the future."

Norn Iron Supporter, your "argument" is weak and boring. Do us northern Irish people really have to keep educating you brits as to how living in the statelet of NI, you can be Irish or British? Why is this so hard for you to understand? My passport says Irish, simple. Leave this rubbish out of sport and let the real football fans talk about football!!

Ryan in Belfast. Typical, isn't it They expect catholic players to turn up and put up with the Billy Boys and other hate dirges an the notorious 1993 episode when even Bimngham was leading the mob in singing. The McClean generation will have grown up with that memory so why wouldn he not take the option available. As Ivan Little in his Sunday Life article said, three catholics play for Linfield and yet the sectarian songs are allowed by that club. The same mentality still pervades with NI fans but they've been curtailed recently at windsor.

Technically speaking N.I. shouldnt even have a team because it is not a country!! same goes for scotland, england, whales. Your United kingdom removed them from the map as a country well apart from N.I. as that was only made up not so long ago. If you are irish you can play for ireland simple as. Born in Ireland, Irish passport stop wasting your breath on the matter. The majority of sports on this island are ireland! representing the whole island, time the other backward sports followed suit

@Norn Iron supporter. Well whether you like it or not, half the population of NI are legally Irish citizens, soo am i and so is James McClean, so we're entitled to play for ROI. The days are gone wheen Loyalists/Unionists were allowed to try to dictate to nationalists what they can or cannot do. James McClean has already said he doesnt want to play for NI due to the unfriendly autmosphere from NI fans towards Catholics.

All this fuss because the Italian picked the Scotch man McGeady & the English man Cox ahead of the Northern Irish guy McClean for the Republic of Ireland? What a joke...
