Provincial council president Aogan Farrell revealed at the launch that fans have been snapping up the tickets, priced at €23 or £20, which provides admission to every game.

"Sales have been phenomenal already," he said, and promised another feast of pre-season football to match this year's high quality tournament.

"The 2011 final between Derry and Tyrone was a fantastic, pulsating game of football that many people would love to see in every championship match."

And he pointed out that success in the competition has a correlation with championship success, with Donegal and Derry, who shared the last three McKenna Cup titles, having reached this year's Ulster final.

A new sponsor was also unveiled at the launch at Queen's University. Power NI will be the backers for the 2012 Dr McKenna Cup, which begins on 8 January.
