Northern Ireland swimmers are leading medal hopes during the second day of the Paralympic Games.

16-year-old Bethany Firth is a firm medal contender after finishing second in the 100m backstroke and fourth fastest overall.

The Downpatrick girl will also compete in the 100m breaststroke and 200m freestyle events.

Also in swimming, Laurence McGivern qualified sixth fastest for the 100m backstroke final on Friday night.

The Newry man shaved almost two seconds off his personal best in the heat.

In athletics, Sally Brown begins her medal campaign ranking fourth in the first round of the 200m.

Gold medal sprinter Jason Smyth will contend his titles during the first round of the 100m on Friday at 9.30pm.
