Swifts fight back to draw with Portadown

There was another goal feast at Stangmore Park when Portadown visited.

Dungannon Swifts 4 - 4 Portadown

It didn't quite reach the ten goal heights of the November's fixture when Ronnie McFall's men ran riot but eight goals in a more balanced match was even better entertainment for the large turnout.

Swifts perhaps will be more disappointed to have taken just a point as they led three times during the hour and a half but Portadown will argue that they were on top with just a couple of minutes to go, only to be caught late and that left them sore with just a point for their endeavours.

Much was expected of Richard Lecky, a four goal hero the last day at Dungannon, but his involvement lasted just four minutes before an ankle injury forced him out.

Swifts showed best in the early exchanges and opened the scoring through Mickey Ward on 14 minutes.

And, when Johnny Topley levelled on 31 minutes, Swifts reacted quickly through Timmy Adamson to restore the lead with a long range finish.

Gary McCutcheon tied the game up at 2-2 on 36 minutes but Swifts edged ahead for a third time just before the break when Adam McMinn popped up with a header after Marc McCann crossed.

There was no let-up in the action after the break, but goals were a little harder to come by.

Portadown grabbed the first on 78 minutes when McCutcheon hit a stylish shot on the turn with Darren Kelly putting his side ahead for the first time with a stunning long range low shot on 83 minutes.

That looked to have sealed the deal for the visitors but Shane Coney equalised with three minutes left when he ran the length of the Ports half before expertly rounding the keeper and slotting to an empty net.

Both managers expressed disappointment at having to share the points.

Dixie Robinson said: "There was a touch of a midweek cup defeat hangover about us but still we led three times and I am disappointed not to have held on. However, it could have been worse if Shane hadn't popped up with a late equaliser."

Ports manager Ronnie McFall was critical of his defence.

"We were shocking at the back and had to work hard to get back into the game on several occasions. Then, when we finally get in front, we concede a late goal, undoing some good work," he said.
