Suspensions after GAA ref attack

The GAA has expelled one player, two club members and a member of the coaching staff of St Mary's Rasharkin after an assault on a referee last month.

Ray Matthews was taken to hospital after being attacked at the end of an Antrim Under-21 championship semi-final game against Lamh Dhearg in Ballymena.

"The club will be excluded from all competitions, above but not including Minor, in all codes under the control of CLG for a period of one year," a statement from Antrim GAA said.

Ten people have been handed down various punishments, ranging from four-week suspensions to recommended expulsions as a result of the attack.

All the people concerned are from the Rasharkin club.


Detailed suspensions:

Six players:
Two players received 4 week suspensions.
One player received 8 week suspension.
One player received 72 week suspension.
One player received 96 week suspension.
One player recommended for expulsion from the Association.

One Team Mentor:
One member recommended for expulsion from the Association.

Three Club Members:
One suspension of 96 weeks imposed.
Two members recommended for expulsion from the Association.

One Partisan:
One person debarred from entering GAA property for 96 weeks.

i have a been a player and supporter st marys rasharkin for over 60 years and i have never seen my club so blackened by the tv papers and reporters over one match as was this one this ref and lamh dhearg especially the club lamh dhearg have been involved in 3 other match brawls they got off scot free i would like to see a bit of fair play
