Laverty was kept off the podium top spot only by the 0.042 of a second that separated him from former teammate Marco Melandri.
But second was a strong result for the Aprilia rider, who had qualified in third and finished fifth in the first race.
Not so fortunate was Ballyclare's Jonathan Rea, who crashed early in the opening race but remounted to finish 16th. He even recovered further during the second race and came in fifth.
Chaz Davies fought off Laverty's current teammate Max Biaggi to take third place - his first ever podium finish - and the top four were separated by just 0.484 of a second.
After the weekend's action, Laverty has moved up one place in the standings to seventh while Rea slips to third.
