Canadian winger Ray Sawada - who was previously drafted by NHL side the Dallas Stars - has signed up for the Belfast Giants as they head into their 15th season.

Sawada, who played for the Stars for three seasons, also has 354 games of experience in the AHL with their affiliate side, the texas Stars - and with the Manitoba Moose and the St John IceCaps.

He racked up 58 goals and 96 assists.

Head of Hockey Steve Thornton spoke to UTV ahead of the signing being made official on Thursday.

He hits like a truck, has a great shot, can play big minutes on a top line and will be an impact player in this league.

"Work ethic, character, it's contagious," Thornton said, of the impact he thinks Sawada will have on the team.

"You bring a guy in who's going to go through the wall, you force other guys to do it.

"He is a team player, and that message was consistent when speaking to former coaches and players that he has played with.

"He will do whatever it takes to win and he will make us a tougher team to play against."

Last season, Sawada played for both the Colorado Eagles in the ECHL and Finnish side Tappara, where he helped the side to a SM-liiga Silver Medal.

The Belfast Giants are set to host the Cardiff Devils in a pre-season clash at the Odyssey Arena on Saturday 30 August, with face-off at 7pm.
