Lawrie Sanchez has said he was interested in returning to manage Northern Ireland.
Nigel Worthington has days left to discuss a new contract with the IFA as Northern Ireland boss.
Worthington has insisted talks with the IFA were still "ongoing", despite declaring his interest in the Sheffield Wednesday's vacant manager position.
Sanchez left the Northern Ireland post midway through the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign to take up a job at Premier League side Fulham, but he is currently out of work.
Sanchez was quoted in reports on Friday morning as admitting the timing of his departure from the Northern Ireland hotseat was one of the biggest regrets of his career.
Earlier this week, IFA President Raymond Kennedy said several people had already contacted him about becoming Northern Ireland manager if Nigel Worthington was to leave for Sheffield Wednesday.
"Over a period of time people have been saying if this ever became vacant I might be interested", the IFA president told UTV.
"I am sure if the job was vacant tomorrow there would be a host of people rolling in."
