The 23-year-old clinched the title with five closing birdies, while Englishman Justin Rose shot a closing 62.

The world number one has become the fourth youngest player in European Tour history to have five victories to his name.

And while he revels in his multi-million dollar payout from Sunday's win, he has also won the praise of Ulster's Rory Best, who said it was brilliant to watch his golfing namesake secure the trophy in Dubai.

"He talked all week about not just wanting to life the European Order of Merit Trophy, but he wanted to lift that tournament trophy on the Sunday and to be fair to him he did it," said Best.

"He showed why he's the best golfer in the world and he showed why he's going to be there for years to come because he not only is a phenomenal talent, he's got unbelievable competitive edge about him."

McIlroy has been spotted taking in a match at Ravenhill with girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki, where he's watched the players in their PRO12 battle.

But the Ireland international said he believes watching McIlroy on - and off - the green is a much more rewarding experience.

"There's no doubt that we take inspiration from him to be such a global success.

"He's a massive name and it really gives us something extra here that somebody from Northern Ireland and Ulster can be the best in the world."
