Rory McIlroy is in the mix at the top of the US PGA Championship leaderboard at Valhalla, and has said he is pleased with the way he came back from what he branded his "worst shot in weeks".

The Co Down golfer was tied one shot off the lead after his first round, with a five-under-par 66.

McIlroy double bogeyed the 10th and later admitted he was "really annoyed" by that slip.

"The second shot on 10 was actually a bit of a shock - it's the worst shot I have hit the last few weeks," the 25-year-old said.

"It came out of the blue and knocked me off track, but to come back the way I did was great. I really needed that and it shows mentally where I am at with my game."

I have a good thing going and am just trying to ride the momentum as much as I can.

While he did follow up with a bogey at the 11th, McIlroy did improve after that to end up one shot off the pace set by early leaders Lee Westwood, Kevin Chappell, and Ryan Palmer.

"Things like 10 happen - you hit bad shots like that every now and then, and I was really annoyed with myself to bogey the next hole as well," McIlroy said.

"After I hit that second shot on 12, I started to give myself a 'C'mon, that was better' and that sort of kick-started things.

"It could have been a couple better if those last few putts had dropped, but 66 is a solid start."

Co Offaly golfer Shane Lowry sits on a three-under-par 68, while Portrush's Graeme McDowell ended with a two-over-par 73 - tied with a number of others including Dubliner Padraig Harrington.

Dungannon man Darren Clarke trails on an eight-over-par 79.
