Martin Rogan's showdown with Matt Skelton is off, after the Belfast fighter suffered an ankle injury in training.

The popular local heavyweight was set to go toe-to-toe for a second time with the man dubbed The Bedford Bear at King's Hall on 12 November.

However he has been forced to cancel the much-anticipated bout due to tendon damage sustained in training on Wednesday, which could take six weeks to heal.

In a statement, the 40-year-old apologised to fans saying: "If it wasn't for bad luck I would have no luck at all.

"I am so sorry that the undercard fighters will not have a show and the fans won't have one to attend. I am emotionally distraught at this time because I have been battered from pillar to post in recent weeks and yet haven't been inside a boxing ring."

More than 1,000 tickets had already been sold for the 'Brawl In The Hall', which was also to include the return of local fighters Martin Lindsay and Kevin O'Hara.

Rogan said tickets purchased online will get a full refund.

"I know people will be disappointed," he continued. "This impacts greatly on me, so soon before Christmas too.

"I wanted to finish the year on a high and look forward to 2012 being a big year for the Irish heavyweight scene. But now I am looking at returning to training in January with a view to hopefully getting back into action around March."
