Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers failed to make any new signings as the transfer window closed on Friday evening, despite admitting he was on the hunt for more fire power.

US striker Clint Dempsey had been keen to make the jump to Anfield, but Liverpool left it late to show interest. The Fulham player moved to Tottenham Hotspur.

Yossi Benayoun was also one of the names being fired around, with speculation the Israeli star could be on his way back to Anfield from Chelsea.

However, he instead returned on loan to another former club - West Ham.

The transfer window closed at 11pm on Friday.

Carnlough man Rodgers earlier told reporters his objective was to bring in proven goalscorers.

"We're hopeful," Rodgers said, during a press conference ahead of his side's game against Arsenal.

"There are obviously a lot of people upstairs who are doing a lot of great work and working very, very hard. Let's hope by the time it shuts later on that we've got some reinforcements."

If we can get recognised goalscorers to come in, that's the objective.

Rodgers confirmed that there had still been a number of players who were the subject of enquiries and that he had been looking to make one or maybe two signings.

"Lots of names that have been thrown out there, unfortunately, have been thrown out there for other reasons than us having the money and resources to get them in, which is the brutal honesty of it," he added.

The Carnlough man has already explained letting striker Andy Carroll go because he couldn't afford to keep a £35m player as a third choice.

"He wants game time. He's a good guy, has worked well in training, but I can only pick 11 players and I've got some wonderful talents here like Luis Suarez," Rodgers said.

Charlie Adam, who has left Liverpool in a £5m deal with Stoke City, said: "The opportunity to play was getting less and I felt that, at my age, I wanted to play every week and hopefully I'll get a chance to here."

"It's a great club that's going in the right direction - the foundations are here."

Among the other outward traffic from Anfield, Jay Spearing has been loaned out to Owen Coyle's Bolton Wanderers for the season.

I don't want to, out of respect for the other clubs and players, sit and go through every single name that has been linked with Liverpool.

Making the move to Liverpool is German youth striker Samed Yesil, signed from Bayer Leverkusen.

Rodgers, who has previously stated his intentions to introduce stability at Anfield and build a club for the future, is keen to develop younger players and has high hopes for Yesil.

"He had a terrific tournament at the U17 World Cup and we hope that over the next couple of years, we'll see how he comes along," the manager said.

"He's a goalscorer, he comes in with good pedigree and I hope we can see him develop and progress through to the first team."

Meanwhile, after guiding Liverpool to the group stages of the Europa League, Rodgers now knows who his side will face - with the Reds first out of the pot in Friday's draw.

The draw took place in Monaco and saw Liverpool - one of the 12 top seeds - picked for Group A, alongside Italy's Serie A side Udinese, Switzerland's Young Boys and FC Anzhi Makhachkala of Russia.

Newcastle have been drawn in Group D, joined by Bordeaux, Club Brugge and Marítimo.

Tottenham will play in Group J, where they're joined by Panathinaikos, Lazio and Maribor.

This is to al, just what do i need to get a grip of, all the talk from BR was replacing the players who leave and that, if you hadn't noticed DIDN'T happen. As for being a so called supporter i think 42 years following LFC and seeing the likes of shankly, paisley, joe fagan and kenny put the club at the top and keep them there i am probably as so called a supporter you can get. I haven't slated anyone at the club, but i can see that what is happening is NOT, what we were told would happen by FSG.We were told good investment and good business would be done at the club THIS summer by Tom Werner on LFCTV in an interview so this post and my other is purely a response to that.I am not some two minute follower who expects FSG to break the bank on the best players but like any true fan if they say that something WILL happen then i as well as everybody else expects them to keep their promises with fact and do what they said they were going to do. THE FACT IS THEY HAVEN'T FULFILLED THEIR PROMISE AND I FOR 1 AM NOT BEST PLEASED THAT THEY LIKE THEIR PREDECESSORS HAVE LIED ABOUT WHAT THEY WOULD DO TO PUT LFC BACK WHERE THEY BELONG. Do you really think they are here for the long term because all the signs are we have another h&g saga and you as well as i know what happened with that. We haven't got a sugar daddy and i know that but if they say they will do then they should do. How much longer are they going to review the stadium situation by the way, another h&g pile of bull and OH LOOK!!!!! FSG are doing the same.HMMMMMM GET A GRIP SEEMS A LITTLE SILLY TO ME, I THINK I SHOULD GET A COPY OF THEIR INTERVIEWS ON LFCTV,SHOW IT TO THEM AND WATCH THE RED FACED REACTION. They have spun us a load of c**p and like the good supporters we are they expect us to sit back and enjoy.I lay no blame at the feet of rodger's because he would not have said what he said about in's and outs if he didn't think it was true,so then you have to look at who is telling the truth and from where i am sitting it ain't FSG.I think we have brought in 5 good players and just hope they can do the business because if they dont and the youngsters dont do it either where will that leave us then. BR will get the sack and FSG will do it again and lay the blame at everyone but themselves. Also i dont see them being tight with their money when it comes to the red sox and according to them LFC was to be put on an equally financial footing as them. We haven't got players that earn 20-30-40 million dollars on a 4/5 year contract, check the red sox they have and they spend 100's of millions of dollars on bringing in new signings to play rounders ffs. GET A GRIP DONT MAKE ME LAUGH LAD. Do your research before you post things on websites and if i have an opinion then allow me to post without getting grief over it. YNWA JFT96

to win games you need to score goals. despite playing well against man city liverpool did not win. the hearts game underlined the requirement of a goal scorer in the squad. kyut, bellamy, maxi and carroll have been shipped out this summer leaving the goalscoring duties to suarez and the unproven borini. the owners clearly should have funded the acquisition of dempsey at the very least. unbelievable that liverpool would have let this proven goalscorer and a player who wanted to come to anfield and was wanted by rodgers slip through their fingers for the want of 7m. it seems to me that the md of lfc - ian ayre - seems out of his depth regarding player recruitment and that the current owners are letting rodgers down. our capacity to score goals appeared to be stronger at the end of last season than it is now with the window shut. h and g / fsg = emperors new clothes. still no further on with the new stadium / redevelopment. brendy will do well to match last years 8th finish. ynwa.

King Kenny squandered a 100 million on players who let him down. The club can't afford to spend that amount each year. The belt has therefore been tightened this year for Brendan Rogers. I am optimistic that Buck and his staff will bring on Borini, Morgan, and that new young striker just arrived from Sami's club. I am impressed with Buck's signings so far. The Voice, you and lots of other so called 'supporters' need to get a grip.

The man is not fir for the job his claim to be interested in taking the club forward is pathetic, he has taken more backward steps than a toddler learning to walk, way out of is depth Swansea were about his limit no expectation's of doing anything special apart from staying in the premier he will be gone by Xmas i hope but i would prefer sooner rather than later.

WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING AT LIVERPOOL. I can't believe we didn't bring in any players to replace the ones that left. LFC this stinks and is going to be another h&g saga with rodgers becoming the new rafa in having to sell players to buy new ones. LFC are once again going to be the laughing stock of the premier league. How can they let andy caroll go and not replace him? This is getting very silly, very quickly. I love LFC and wouldn't change them for anything but i am very dissapointed in the way this summer has panned ou. Lets just hope the signing's we made are capable of producing the results we need.
