Record Rules win for Ireland

Ireland won the International Rules series by a record margin after beating Australia 50-29 in Friday's second test on the Gold Coast.

That left Anthony Tohill's side 130-65 winners on aggregate.

Like many of its predecessors it was an untidy match and the niggle began even before the opening whistle.

Five players, including Armagh's Kieran McKeever, were shown yellow cards by the overworked referee.

Ireland never looked like relinquishing their 44 point lead from the first test, although they did trail briefly in the first quarter before Stevie McDonnell came to the rescue near the first break by which time Tohill's men led 12-8.

Donegal's Michael Murphy was also in good form as Ireland remained in control in the second period.

The only goal came with five minutes before the half way mark, Leighton Glynn easily beating Aussie goalkeeper Matthew Suckling.

The niggle became a bit more serious in the third quarter and a couple of brawls broke out.

Away from the fighting, Ireland continued to dominate the scoring and they led 41-24 going into the last quarter.

It was a similar story in the last period as Murphy, Tommy Walsh and Eamon O'Callaghan all sent over three pointers to wrap up an easy victory.
