The move was confirmed following a vote by Scottish Football League chairmen at Hampden on Friday afternoon.

The 30 SFL teams were asked to decide on whether Charles Green's newco Rangers should enter the league and which division they should start in.

SFL chief executive David Longmuir said: "The member clubs of the Scottish Football League have today voted to willingly accept The Rangers Football Club as an associate member of the Scottish Football League.

"Furthermore, the Scottish Football League's only acceptable position will be to place Rangers FC into the Third Division of the Irn-Bru Scottish Football League from the start of this season."

He added: "I'm comfortable today that the Scottish Football League made a very, very decisive decision that was based on sporting fairness and I think the Scottish Football League were in the right place to make that decision.

"This decision followed a tried-and-tested process and was taken in cognisance with the other options which were available for consideration.

"Today's decision has been one of the most difficult for all concerned but it has been taken in the best interest of sporting fairness which is the fundamental principle of the Scottish Football League.

"The Scottish Football League has been entirely consistent with our willingness to work with other bodies to ensure that we focus on rebuilding our game, restoring pride in our game and exploring revenue streams and our willingness to achieve these aims does not alter."

The Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football Association had hoped the club were going to be parachuted into the First Division.

SFA chief executive Stewart Regan had said that putting the Ibrox side into the Third Division would bring financial catastrophe and a "slow, lingering death" of the game.

A statement on the official Rangers website confirmed discussions over forming an SPL2 were still up in the air following the vote.

The statement read: "It was mooted last week that plans for an SPL2 would swing into action in the event of today's outcome but it is not known if this will be the case."

Oh Henry, not another 1. Please read my posts before going into your bigoted rants. I have not blamed Celtic fans for Rangers mess in any of my posts, I have clearly stated that it is the result of the previous owners, and before you go off on another one I have clearly stated that we accept the wrongdoing and the punishment that we have received. Your bigotted hatred does not help Scottish football.

Conor or Con in belfast, not sure if you're the same person. Please read my post before going into your bigoted rants. I have not mentioned Rangers achievements in the last 20 years. I have referred to their proud 104 year history in which they have become not only the most sucessful club in Glasgow, Scotland or Britain but the most sucessful club in the world (FACT !!!). Where did you get this rule that a club cant claim anything when it is liquidated. Is this in the Republican book of bigotry? Are we no longer allowed to talk about Titanic as both the company that built and the company that owned the liner are no longer in existance. Open up your bigoted mind to the wider picture. By the way are you going to the Kilmarnock away match.

erky, you can't complain that it was the work of the previous owners (whyte and Murray) that did this to you and that you are paying the price, but still like to bum up the achievements you have made in the last 20 years. you can only claim to be scotland's most uccessful domestic side due to murray's mismanagement in that period. he ran your football club into the ground with his need to be more successful than celtic. a club can no longer claim to be the most successful club when that club gets liquidated. 43 titles and european champions is certainly more successful than liquidation.

@Erky so i suppose rangers are the most sucessful cheating glasgow club, dont come on here trying to blame the celts fans for rangers mess and sure didnt the rangers fans claim that if any of the SPL clubs voted rangers out then they would boycott their grounds, well now your out and the boycotting has been done for you, enjoy listening to your results on the radio while the rest of us watch the big boys on tv, pmsl CHEATS
