Points a constant worry for O'Neill

Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill admits he worries constantly over the fight for Barclays Premier League points.

The Black Cats eased themselves on to 30 points with Wednesday night's resounding 3-0 victory over Norwich to take the Ulsterman's return since he replaced Steve Bruce at the helm to an impressive 19 from the 27 on offer.

That was enough to ease them into eighth place in the table and surely banish their fears of being dragged into the fight against relegation they found themselves in as Bruce's reign drew to a close.

However, O'Neill, while delighted with a tally of which he could hardly have dreamt when he first picked up the reins, is no more ready to relax as he prepares for the weekend's tough trip to Stoke.

Asked if he still frets over his side's vastly improved standing, he said: "Every day, of course.

"I remember saying to you here way back some weeks ago, the first ambition of mine was to try to get level points from the number of games we had played.

"That was the first thought so it would give you a little bit of respite, you would need that on the board, and then eventually, you would look to go past that.

"We were able to achieve that and then obviously, the winning of the games gives the players the confidence and self-belief to go on.

"Winning football matches is the be all and end all."

That has been largely what Sunderland have done since O'Neill's arrival, with seven victories, two draws and just two defeats comprising their run in all competitions.

They currently lie just one place below Champions League regulars Arsenal, although the manager almost snorted with derision when Europe was mentioned in passing after the Norwich game.

He said: "Naturally, I am delighted for the points we have accumulated, and it's far more than we could ever have imagined and ever have expected at this stage.

"I am also mindful of the fact that we have a distance to go to make sure we get those extra points on the board, and while the eighth position seems pretty decent, it is not something I have always concerned myself about.

"You just try to keep the momentum going, which will be important because if you lose it, then you don't know where it comes from again."

Injuries continue to play a significant role in the Black Cats' season with Wes Brown sidelined for up to two months, David Vaughan facing a number of weeks about and skipper Lee Cattermole only expected to return to training at the end of next week.

But loan signings Wayne Bridge and Sotirios Kyrgiakos are now on board - Bridge appeared as a late substitute in midweek and the Greece international is the squad for Saturday - and Fraizer Campbell's blistering return has provided a welcome boost.

The 24-year-old has scored twice since being thrust back into the action as a half-time substitute in the 1-1 FA Cup fourth round draw with Middlesbrough last Sunday after 17 long months on the casualty list.

However, it is the instant rapport he has struck up with Benin international Stephane Sessegnon as much as his fitness which has been so pleasing.

O'Neill said: "It's gone very well, but of course, we are looking at a game and a half.

"I am very pleased with him - I am pleased he has got on the field of play.

"I'm obviously delighted he has made such an impact, but to ask him now to go and continue that there...

"I am sure he thinks there's no reason why he can't do, but I am just careful, genuinely careful, about trying to keep him fit now at this moment."

Meanwhile, Sunderland has announced a price freeze on season cards for the 2012-13 campaign.
