No surprises for Dungannon Swifts
This tie was over after the first leg mauling which Dungannon Swifts inflicted on Institute.
Tuesday, 15 December 2009
Institute 0 - 1 Dungannon Swifts (2 - 7 agg.)
Their main man that day was Neil McCafferty and this second leg encounter was also dominated by the midfielder. In fact the ex-Derry City man fired the only goal in what was an otherwise disappointing affair.
Prior to the kick-off both sides had to make changes with Gavin Cullen being replaced by Alan Ryan in the 'Stute goal, while Craig McClean replaced first leg hero Alan Emerson for the Swifts.
Knowing they needed to score four goals to draw level Institute boss started with three men up front, in the shape of Kevin Ramsey, Stephen Parkhouse and Paul Brown, but in truth the visitors never looked in any real danger of losing their first leg advantage.
However after 12 minutes a clever lay-off from Ramsey found Parkhouse inside the area, but his left foot shot was straight at Alvin Rouse.
Swifts had to make a change on the half hour mark when Calvin Mooney had to be replaced with Michael Ward, after the ex-'Stute front man ran into David Ogilby's left boot and resulted in him needing stitches.
Right on the stroke of half-time the home side missed a glorious chance to break the deadlock when Parkhouse's flick found an unmarked Ramsey at the back post, but his downward header from six yards bounced into the ground before Rouse easily gathered.
The Londonderry men made a substitute at the break when youngster Paul Lowry replaced Ramsey, but the speedy centre-forward failed to inject much life into his team-mates.
In fact it was Dungannon who continued to play the better football and never looked in danger of conceding a goal, let alone conceding the four, which the home side needed.
This game was over as a contest on 74 minutes when midfielder Neil McCafferty produced a stunning strike to break the deadlock.
The talented midfielder's 25 yarder from the left hand edge of the area, flew into Ryan's top right hand corner.
