Great Britain defenceman David Phillips will not return to Belfast after signing for Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League.
It comes after he shone in an evaluation camp in Chicago last week.
The 21 year-old, who was due to return to Elite League side Belfast Giants for a second year, was offered the chance to showcase his talents by Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League.
Phillips, who has penned a two-way contract with the IceHogs and ECHL's Gwinnett Gladiators, said: "I'm gutted I won't be playing in Belfast next season but I'm really excited about this and it is a great opportunity.
"I never even dreamed of getting to skate with prospects from an NHL team in front of their scouts and management and now I'll have the chance to play week in, week out with them."
