The popular Dungannon native, who now calls Portrush home, still hasn't watched a shot of last year's big win.
"Maybe I should have done, by the way I've been playing," Clarke joked.
"I think I will watch it before the tournament starts. I was calm and relaxed last year and I need to get in the mental state again."
He added that his goal is simply to enjoy next week's event at Royal Lytham and to play well.
"I wasn't supposed to win last year, but who knows - I might not be meant to win this year either!"
While being Open champ has its perks, Clarke lists being announced as such at different tees around the world as his personal highlight.
"For a player, it doesn't get better than that," he said.
