Thousands of fans flocked to Brechin City's ground for the Ramsdens Cup fixture as Rangers began life as a third division outfit.
Northern Ireland star Andrew Little, who re-signed for the Ibrox club on Saturday, opened the scoring early in the first half.
But second division Brechin levelled with Andrew Jackson's goal just before the break.
Rangers couldn't re-take the lead in the 90 minutes but a winner eventually came in extra time through Lee McCulloch.
It puts the newco in the draw for the second round of the Ramsdens Cup.
