A number of changes were the order of the day for Belfast Giants with a total of ten new
signings.

The Giants start their campaign missing Stephen Murphy in goal, Sean McMorrow plus Steve Thornton on the forward line and Tim Cook on defence.

Belfast certainly looked sharper out of the box, scoring four goals in the first period with Evan Cheverie hitting the post and also looking very active.

All before Colin Shields set up smooth skating Michael Jacobssen for the opening score at 9.33.

That was quickly followed by Pierre Luc Faubert goal on 10.26 both assisted by Colin Shields.

With just over two minutes left in the period, sloppy Belfast defence let the Vipers in with an easy goal by Richie Thornton.

Giants lost little time in addressing the goal difference with Brendan Benedict bouncing the puck of Robinson's pads from behind the net to give Belfast a two-goal cushion assisted by Kevin Peacock.

On the last stroke of the clock Mark Morrison netted an unassisted goal to make the score 4-1 with Belfast looking very comfortable. after the first period of play.

The middle period proved to be much the same with the Giants jumping into a 6-1 lead through Pierre Luc Faubert's second and Kevin Peacock's first score.

The Vipers hustle seemed to quicken which proved to be a positive move with Todd Griffin netting Newcastle's second of the night, ending the period 6-2.

In the final period Morrison scored his second goal of the night with Faubert taking his third point assisting after netting two goals of his own earlier.

The Giants had this one in the bag and gave everyone ice time including young Robbie
Brown who played a solid shift throughout the game with George Awada and Mark Morrison.

Mark Morrison netted his second on the night to give his new season a memorable start.

However the new line of Pat Bateman, Pierre Luc Faubert and Colin Shield were the stars of the show with Faubert getting his hat trick in the last seconds of play closing out the game at 8-3.
