Murphy's return was confirmed on Monday night, as fans gathered at the Odyssey Arena to hear from departing general manager Todd Kelman and new head coach Steve Thornton.

Speaking about the netminder's return, Thornton said it had been an easy decision to keep him.

"He has been the backbone of this team for a number of years, helping the Giants to two league championships in the last three seasons, and he is a great teammate," he said.

Thornton is not just the team's new coach though, having taken up a role as head of hockey operations in preparation for the exit of long-serving GM and former player Todd Kelman.

Fans were left shocked when it was announced last week that Kelman would be leaving after 14 years with the Giants, to join a consortium in taking over ownership of the Cardiff Devils.
