The future of the Carling Nations Cup looks in real doubt after the Irish FA confirmed it is "highly unlikely" the tournament will take place again.

The Nations Cup, which includes Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland, struggled to attract interest last year when it was held in Dublin.

The tournament suffered from poor attendances and a row over competition fees.

In an official statement, Irish FA President Jim Shaw said: "The Carling Nations Cup was a one-off to start with. It is highly unlikely that it will take place again."

However Mr Shaw denied Northern Ireland had withdrawn from the tournament, following newspaper allegations.

"The Irish FA has not pulled out of the tournament," he said.

The host nation lifted the inaugural title in 2011, while Northern Ireland ended the tournament without a single point or even a goal.

The next Nations Cup has been provisionally scheduled to be held in Wales in 2013.
