Newly-appointed Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill has scooped the top prize at the Airtricity / Soccer Writers' Association of Ireland Awards ceremony.

The former Shamrock Rovers boss was named personality of the year at the annual banquet in Dublin on Friday.

He was rewarded for his success at the club, the first League of Ireland side to qualify for the group stages of the Europa League.

He was also recognised for his achievement in guiding Shamrock Rovers to back-to-back Airtricty League titles - his second championship in his three-year spell at the Tallaght club.

Speaking at the presentation of the awards, Stephen Wheeler, Managing Director of Airtricity said:

"It's fitting that the overall Personality of the Year Award should go to Michael O'Neill who not only guided Shamrock Rovers to an historic second League Title in a row, but also steered the Hoops to the highest level that any Irish side has achieved in European competition, and in doing so made every soccer fan justly proud."

Meanwhile Derry City's Gerard Doherty was named Goalkeeper of the Year.

A special presentation was also made on the night to Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni following the side's qualification for this summer's Euro 2012 Championships in Poland and Ukraine.

O'Neill's first game in charge as Northern Ireland manager is a home friendly against Norway on 29 February.
