Northern Ireland have drawn 1-1 against Israel in Wednesday's international friendly in Belfast.

Grant McCann put the province ahead in the 17th minute with a 20-yard free-kick after being upended.

However, Israel equalised eight minutes later when Elyaniv Barda clipped his effort over goalkeeper Maik Taylor.

Israel were the first to show with Avihai Yadin rattling in a shot from distance after six minutes.

However Birmingham goalkeeper Maik Taylor got his body behind the ball to make a comfortable save.

Northern Ireland responded and Hughes tried to release Healy four minutes later with a clever through ball.

The striker, stuck on 35 goals, showed good awareness only for Avi Strul to clear the danger.

Israel were playing some neat football and Yossi Benayoun saw his effort cannon off George McCartney in the 15th minute.

Northern Ireland made four changes at half-time, including the goalkeeper, with Partick's Jonny Tuffey replacing Taylor.

Steven Davis, Gareth McAuley and Niall McGinn also entered the fray with Hughes, Johnson and Chris Brunt all standing down.

Israel changed their goalkeeper as well with Nir Davidovich coming on for Aouate.

Healy turned quickly in the 51st minute but was unable to get enough power on his shot and Davidovich made the save.

Three minutes later Benayoun came off and was replaced by Salim Toama.

McGinn then launched the ball forward into the path of Lafferty but Davidovich made the interception in the nick of time.

Healy came off in the 59th minute having failed to add to his tally with Martin Paterson getting a run out.

The Sunderland striker's form must be a concern for manager Nigel Worthington with crucial games to come.

Davis then sent his Rangers team-mate Lafferty clear down the left in the 66th minute but his cross was cut out and the move broke down.

Paterson showed good skill to carve out an opening in the 69th minute and released Davis but he hesitated and the ball was cleared.

Northern Ireland continued to push forward and McAuley headed wide following a cross from McCann in the 79th minute.

The province were grateful to Tuffey a minute later, however, when he booted clear Collauti's close-range effort as the friendly ended with honours even.

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans sat out Northern Ireland's draw with Israel at Windsor Park with an ankle injury, and returned to his club on the day of the game.

Manager Nigel Worthington said: "Jonny trained extremely well on Monday and Tuesday but woke up today with a stiff ankle.

"There was no way I was going to risk him from our point of view. With him being in and around the first team, I wasn't going to risk him with Manchester United either.

"I spoke to the club and he was back on the first available plane. That's the way you have to work with clubs. Had it been a qualifier it might have been different."

With qualifiers to come against Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, Worthington was pleased with the workout, substitute goalkeeper Jonny Tuffey making a fine save near the end.

Worthington added: "It was a useful exercise and I was very pleased with our second-half display. We passed the ball quicker and played some good football."
