Mulgrew praises Celtic attitude

Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew claimed self-belief was more important than practice for set-piece deliveries after his dead-ball prowess inspired a 3-0 win at Dunfermline.

Mulgrew scored one and helped set up two more as Celtic retained top spot with their 10th consecutive Clydesdale Bank Premier League win.

Anthony Stokes did most of the work for the 18th-minute opener at East End Park - executing a superb curling shot into the top corner from the edge of the box after Mulgrew's cross had been half-cleared following a short corner.

But manager Neil Lennon described Mulgrew's delivery as "sublime" after his deep free-kick was volleyed home by Victor Wanyama five minutes before the break and the former Aberdeen player curled home a 30-yard free-kick midway through the second half.

Mulgrew, whose corner set up Joe Ledley's match-winner against Rangers last week, said: "I like to work on it as often as I get the chance to.

"There are a lot of games so it's difficult, you need to save your legs, especially at this time of the season.

"But I like to practise it when I get the chance.

"I just hit a few in the 10-15 minutes after training. But most importantly it's about believing in yourself when it comes to the match and having that mentality.

"The main thing is that we get on the end of them and they go in.

"I'm glad we've done that in the last couple of games."

Celtic's winning run is in stark contrast to their patchy early-season form - they were in third place and 15 points behind Rangers before their win at Motherwell began the sequence on November 6.

Mulgrew cannot pinpoint the reason behind the improvement.

"It's really hard to say," he said. "There is not much we are doing different.

"Maybe there is a bit more belief in ourselves now and it took a couple of wins to get that belief. But nothing has been done yet and we just need to keep grinding away."

The defeat left Dunfermline bottom of the SPL, one point behind Hibernian, with a difficult Scottish Cup tie at Inverness to come on Saturday.

Manager Jim McIntyre was disappointed with the room Wanyama was afforded to score the second and felt Chris Smith should have kept out Mulgrew's shot, which sailed over the goalkeeper into the middle of the net.

But he was pleased with his side's work-rate and attitude and is looking ahead to a crucial month, which also includes SPL games against Hibs, Kilmarnock, Motherwell and Aberdeen.

"We've said to the boys January is a huge month in terms of who we play," McIntyre said.

"Starting with the cup game, it's really important we go up to Inverness and get a result.

"Then we have Hibs the following week, which is another crucial game, and they just keep coming in January. It will go a long way to shaping our season."
