The visitors were dominant in the early stages of Saturday's game, with Donal O'Hare scoring five first-half points but Meath reduced the deficit to 0-06 to 0-07 at the half way point.

Meath took the lead early in the second half when Graham Reilly scored the game's first goal.

Down responded almost immediately afterwards when Ambrose Rodgers netted to put the Mourne County in front once again.

Down should have extended their lead but missed several chances in the second period and they were made to pay by the Royal County.

Meath hit six of the last eight scores to win the game by three points.

The result moves Meath into fourth position in Division 2 level on seven points with the Mourne County.

Down can still get promotion to Division 1 but they will need to beat Laois next weekend and hope other results go their way.

Elsewhere in Division 3, there was a big top of the table clash as Cavan beat Roscommon 0-14 to 1-08 at Breffni Park.
