The Holywood man shot a one under par 71 to end the day on two under, a tie for 14th position.
The 24-year-old bogeyed the eighth, but took birdies and 10 and 13.
A double bogey at the last saw him fall back.
And it all looked to be going well with four birdies in a row to leave him on four under.
But he had a disastrous final hole, hitting the bunker, on the way to a double bogey.
After the round, the former world No 1 walked angrily off the green and banged his putter on the steps leading to the scorers' hut.
Meanwhile, Graeme McDowell is joint 36th after a four over 76.
Padraig Harrington sits amongst a group of players on two under after an impressive 70.
American Luke Gutherie has a one shot lead from Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano at the head of the leaderboard.
