Rory himself picks up a near £1m prize jackpot after his victory at Royal Liverpool - his third major and a feat only Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods also managed by the age of 25.

Having added one of golf's most prestigious titles to his trophy collection, McIlroy is now one major - the US Masters - away from the career grand slam.

His talents as a golfer have been well-documented from an early age and, when he was just 15, his father Gerry and three of his friends each placed a £100 bet that he would win The Open before he turned 26.

At odds of 500/1, the group now stand to pocket a windfall of £200,000.

McIlroy led the tournament from the first round and set a new 54-hole record at Hoylake, his total of 200 beating the previous record by three.

But securing the win and lifting the coveted Claret Jug was a special moment for the young star - one which he dedicated to his mum Rosie.

"I never dreamed of being at this point in my career so quickly. It hasn't really sunk in yet," he added.
