The Co Down golfer finished on a two-under 70 to tie third place in the tournament.
The former world number one scored seven birdies over the 18 holes, but his round was ruined with five bogies.
Meanwhile, Graeme McDowell carded a one over 73.
McDowell got off to a bad start scoring a six on the par five opener in the first of his six bogies, but five birdies helped keep him in touch with the pack.
American Patrick Reed set the early pace, completing four under 68.
