McIlroy had an even-par 71 on the third day of the PGA Tour tournament and is tied for 13th place at Liberty National in New Jersey.
He sits along the likes of Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott at six under.
The Holywood golfer had mixed fortunes during the round carding three birdies and three bogeys on Saturday.
Americans Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland shared the overnight lead, while third placed Kevin Chappell was the big mover on the third day of play as he set a new course record with a round of 62.
Tiger Woods is in a share of fourth place alongside David Lynn after a round of 69 left him four shots off the pace.
Graeme McDowell failed to make the cut in New Jersey.
