Northern Ireland golfer Rory McIlroy missed out on the chance of winning a share of $10m, after failing to qualify for the season ending Tour Championship.

The World Number 7 carded a final round of 69 at the BMW Championship to end the week on three over par.

Dustin Johnson won the tournament on nine under par one shot clear of Paul Casey, leaving McIlroy in tied 37th place and 36th in the FedEx Cup standings.

The Holywood man was hoping to emulate his three under par third round and got off to the perfect start with two birdies in his opening five holes.

A bogey at the sixth hole was the only blemish in an opening nine holes that would see him card another birdie at the ninth to make the turn in 33.

A birdie at ten showed signs of what could be, but a run of three bogeys from the twelfth hole would see him lose all the ground he made up.

A birdie at the par five fifteenth steadied the ship and a par-birdie-par finish, would see him end the week with a 287 total.

McIlroy isn't the only big name casualty of the FedEx Cup, as World number one Tiger Woods also missed out meaning 2010 will be his first season without a tournament victory since 1995.
