The Holywood man only just made the cut at the course where he recorded his first PGA Tour victory, after he could only manage a dismal 76 on Friday evening.

However McIlroy will now begin his final round at Quail Hollow one place outside the top 10 after responding well to that setback.

The world number 11 carded eight bogeys for the round along with just a solitary bogey to move back into contention.

He is now on six-under, seven shots behind leader JB Holmes heading into the final days play.

"I figured a few things out on the putting green last night and tried to take it to the course today and really trust it, just not really care if the ball went in the hole or not but trust what I was doing and it worked," McIlroy told PGA Tour.

"I putted really nicely, held some nice putts, holed the putts that I needed to make and there you go."

McIlroy acknowledged that he had nothing to lose on Saturday, but admitted that Sunday could prove to be more of a challenge.

"It's a very different mentality, I think," McIlroy said.

"I hit a few more drivers out there, when I would have hit fairway woods the first couple of days, and just really aggressive, trying to make as many birdies as you can and get back into the tournament, and I was able to do that today.

"Tomorrow I will probably be chasing again so it will probably be the same thing but once you get yourself in the mix and you're leading or co-leading, it becomes a little different.

"Obviously you're still trying to make birdies but at the same time trying to limit the mistakes."
