The Holywood golfer had started the final day with a two-shot lead only to give it up with four bogeys and a double bogey in an 11-hole stretch on Sunday.

He reached the par-5 18th in two to set up a 12-foot eagle putt but missed his chance to win and joined Henley, Ryan Palmer and Russell Knox in extra holes.

Henley didn't miss his chance though, as the American made birdie on the 18th for the win.

"I didn't play well enough to deserve to win today," McIlroy told PGA Tour after his final round 74.

"It's very disappointing. It was a perfect opportunity to win. No one was really coming at me."

There are a few positives to take, but obviously it's going to be hard to get over because I had a great chance to win my first tournament of the season and I didn't.

"I was sort of in control. There was a lot of holes out there where I was just trying to play these little hold up shots and I was just losing them left. Body was stopping and club was getting past my body," he explained.

"I'm just thinking, play those last few holes just solid, and 16 was what really cost me. I was trying to hit a 6 iron right of the target. I let the wind bring it back and I just got a little underneath it and caught it a little heavy.

"In hindsight, I probably should have hit 5 iron and tried to hold it up because I could have got more on top of it and would have taken that fat shot out of it."

Meanwhile Portrush player Graeme McDowell's closing round of 71 saw him tie for 46th position.

You know what they say, son - 'don't count your chickens before they are hatched'. There are dozens of top class golfers who want to win and have the ability to win just like yourself. As the wee song says - keep right on to the end of the road.
