McIlroy is number one after WGC win

Rory McIlroy has regained top spot in the world golf rankings after winning the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Two weeks after holding off Sergio Garcia to win the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, the Northern Irishman came from three shots behind to overhaul his Ryder Cup team-mate to claim his first World Golf Championship and return to number one for the first time since March 2013.McIlroy had gained a two shot lead within the space of five holes in the final round at Firestone Country Club on Sunday but Garcia battle back and the pair were tied going into the back nine. While the Spaniard had played the same sequence of holes in just 27 shots in his second round, it was McIlroy who triumphed after carding a closing 66 to finish 15 under par and two strokes ahead. It puts McIlroy on top of the world rankings ahead of this week's US PGA Championship at Valhalla. The 25-year-old later tweeted: "Awesome to win my first WGC today at one of my favourite venues... Firestone CC! Thanks everyone for all the support, another big week ahead!"
